Water Conservation and Reuse
Alternate water sources for nonpotable use

Water Use Assessment

A Water Use Assessment analyzes the current water use practices, processes, and fixtures of existing homes, buildings, facilities and developments. The assessment is used to identify potential water saving changes that can be made to reduce water consumption while maintaining, or increasing current productivity. Please note that many times it is a minor change (i.e. repair of a previously unknown leak) that can make significant reduction in volume of water used. Just think- saving water, the environment AND money at the same time!

Although assessments are designed based on specific facility use, typical (larger facilities) Water Use Assessments include:
                              -Establish base flow
                                        -Develop a water balance
                                        -Leak detection if required
                                        -Review metering and submetering
-Review fixture counts, efficiencies, flow rates and leaks
-Analyze potential for alternate water sources
-Evaluate 'domestic' use: restrooms, kitchens, laundry
                                        -Evaluate process systems, methods, equipment
                                        -Review water cooling systems
                                        -Review landscape irrigation

Water Efficiency Management Plan

Data from the Water Use Assessment is used to generate a Water Efficiency Management Plan. This plan identifies options to maximize water use efficiency and reduce amount of water used, while maintaining or increasing current production levels.

The Water Efficiency Management Plan is site specific, however, some plans may contain the following elements:

                                          -Indentify different water conservation options
                                          -Set goals and benchmarks
-Prioritize options by fastest / easiest water reduction
                                          -Determine approximate payback timeframes
-Identify changes in methods and practices to reduce water use
                                          -Employee participation recommendations
                                          -Identify potential alternate water sources
-Identify irrigation, landscape, and stormwater measures
-Set ongoing measures to maximize success of plan
                                          -Procedures to track results
